It's the question I get asked more than any other: Can Reiki really work if we're not in the same room?
I understand the skepticism. In a world where so much has moved online, the idea of energy healing over Zoom can sound like a stretch, or even a gimmick. I was skeptical too, before I experienced it myself.
The short answer is: yes. Distance Reiki works. Genuinely, powerfully, often surprisingly so.
Here's the longer answer.
Why Distance Healing Is Possible
The foundation of Reiki is the understanding that we are energetic beings, that there is a life force energy flowing through and around us that is not contained by the physical body. And energy, unlike physical matter, is not bound by space.
This isn't just spiritual philosophy. Quantum physics has demonstrated that particles can be entangled across vast distances, that what happens to one affects the other instantaneously, regardless of how far apart they are. The concept that energy and intention can travel beyond physical proximity is supported by the same principles that govern modern physics.
Reiki practitioners are trained in what's called the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol, a distance healing symbol used to bridge the space between practitioner and client. With focused intention, the healing energy is directed across any distance to the recipient's energy field.
"Energy is not limited by location. Distance Reiki works for the same reason your phone can receive a signal from a tower miles away, the signal finds you."
What My Clients Experience in Virtual Sessions
In my practice, virtual sessions are consistently as powerful as in-person ones. Some of the most profound client experiences I've witnessed have happened over Zoom.
What clients commonly report in distance sessions:
- The same sensations of warmth, tingling, and deep relaxation as in-person
- Emotional releases that feel as immediate and real as if I were in the room
- Vivid imagery, colors, and dream-like states
- A sense of being held and accompanied, not alone
- Deep sleep in the nights following the session
- Clarity, lightness, and shifts that carry through the following days
Many of my virtual clients have told me they actually prefer it. They receive the healing in their own sacred space, in their own bed or on their own couch, which often allows for deeper surrender.
How a Virtual Reiki Session Works
Virtual sessions are conducted via Zoom and follow the same structure as in-person sessions:
- We open with a brief conversation about where you are and what you're carrying
- I guide you through a short grounding exercise to help you settle in
- You close your eyes, put your phone or computer to the side, and simply receive
- I work with your energy field remotely for approximately 45 minutes
- We close with a conversation about what arose during the session
How to Prepare Your Space for a Distance Session
Because you're receiving the session in your own home, a little preparation goes a long way:
- Choose a quiet space where you won't be interrupted for the full hour
- Lie down on your bed, couch, or a yoga mat, whatever feels most comfortable
- Have a blanket nearby, as the body often cools during deep relaxation
- Dim the lights or use candles if you like
- Put your phone on Do Not Disturb before we begin
- Have water nearby for after the session
Some people like to create a small ritual, lighting incense, placing crystals nearby, or setting an intention before we start. None of this is required, but it can help signal to your nervous system that something special is about to happen.
Who Virtual Sessions Are Perfect For
Distance Reiki makes healing accessible in ways that weren't possible before. Virtual sessions are ideal for:
- Those who live outside of Napa, CA and can't travel for in-person sessions
- People with busy schedules who find it difficult to commute to appointments
- Those who feel safer or more comfortable in their own environment
- Anyone curious about Reiki who wants to try it without having to leave home
- Existing clients who want to maintain their practice between in-person sessions
"Some of my most powerful sessions have happened over Zoom. The energy always finds its way."
My Honest Take
I'll be direct with you: before I experienced distance Reiki as a client, I had questions. It felt less tangible than in-person work. I wasn't sure the energy could really travel.
Then I had a virtual session with a practitioner thousands of miles away. What I felt was undeniable. The warmth. The release. The shift that carried into the days afterward. I stopped asking whether it worked and started asking how I could offer it to my own clients.
The answer to "does distance Reiki work?" is the same as the answer to "does Reiki work?", it does, and the best way to know is to feel it for yourself.
