I became a mother last year and it changed everything. Not just my life, my energy, my body, my sense of self. There's a version of you that exists before you become a mother, and then there's the version that exists after. And the transition between those two versions is one of the most seismic energetic events a human being can move through.
Pregnancy and birth are extraordinary. The body grows an entire person. It expands in ways that feel impossible and then crosses a threshold that words genuinely cannot capture. And the postpartum period, those weeks and months that follow, is one of the most underserved times when it comes to deep healing and support.
We talk a lot about physical recovery after birth. We talk less about what happens energetically. I want to change that.
What Happens Energetically After Birth
The energetic body goes through enormous shifts in pregnancy and continues shifting long after the baby arrives. During pregnancy, your energy field literally expands to hold another being. Your boundaries become more porous. Your capacity to feel, joy, fear, love, grief, magnifies in ways that can feel destabilizing even as they're beautiful.
After birth, that expansion doesn't simply snap back. Hormones cascade in all directions. The identity reshapes, sometimes gently, sometimes with force. There is a profound renegotiation of who you are now, what your body is for, where your energy ends and your baby's begins.
Simultaneously, the body has just done something extraordinary. It is tired at a cellular level. The root chakra, our energetic foundation, our sense of safety and groundedness, has been through tremendous activation and often needs support coming back into balance. The sacral chakra, the center of creation and feminine energy, is processing what it just moved through. The heart has cracked open in the most beautiful way, but open things need tending.
The body needs support processing all of it, not just physically, but energetically. And most of us aren't given any language for that, let alone any tools.
How I Used Reiki in My Own Recovery
I'll be honest: even as a practitioner, I wasn't prepared for what the postpartum period would feel like energetically. I knew how to hold space for others. I didn't know how to hold myself.
A few weeks after my daughter was born, I got back on the table, not as a practitioner, but as a client. I needed someone else to hold the space for once. And what happened during that session is something I'll carry with me always.
I cried almost immediately. Not from sadness, from relief. From being held without needing to hold anything back. From remembering, somewhere beneath the love and exhaustion and identity shift, that I was still in there. That I still existed as a person, not just as a mother.
The release I felt was physical. There was a warmth that moved through my chest, a softening in my solar plexus, a sense of the ground coming back up to meet me after weeks of feeling like I was floating untethered. I left that session feeling more like myself than I had since before I went into labor.
That experience is what made me want to offer this work specifically to new mothers. Because if it did that for me, a practitioner who understands what's happening, imagine what it can do for someone who has never had that kind of energetic support before.
"Becoming a mother cracked me open in the most beautiful way. Reiki helped me find myself again inside of it."
What Postpartum Reiki Sessions Look Like
Postpartum sessions are gentle, intuitive, and completely responsive to wherever you are on any given day. There is no agenda except your wellbeing. You do not need to have it together. You do not need to explain yourself. You just need to show up.
Sessions honor the physical and energetic realities of postpartum life. We work slowly. I may work with energy close to the body without direct contact, following whatever feels right in the moment. There is no pressure of any kind.
Energetically, I'm often drawn to:
- The heart chakra, where the identity shift and expansion of love both live
- The root chakra, restoring a sense of safety, grounding, and steadiness in the body
- The sacral chakra, honoring the creative and physical recovery that's happening here
- The solar plexus, reclaiming a sense of self and personal power within motherhood
Every session is different because every woman is different, and every postpartum experience is its own.
And yes, babies are always welcome. Mommy and Me sessions are available and encouraged.
Mommy and Me Reiki
Babies are some of the most energetically receptive beings on the planet. They haven't learned yet to armor themselves against what they feel. Their systems are wide open, which means they absorb the energy of their environment, including the energy of their primary caregiver, with remarkable sensitivity.
In Mommy and Me sessions, I offer gentle Reiki to both mother and baby. For baby, this is very soft work, hands hovering near the body, no pressure, no agenda. Just warmth and intention directed toward their small, new nervous system.
Babies often still completely during these sessions. Many fall asleep within minutes. What I witness in those moments is something that moves me every time, two beings, settling together, held by the same field of calm.
When to Come In
There is no wrong time to receive postpartum Reiki. But there are times that tend to be particularly meaningful:
- The fourth trimester, those first three months when everything is new and enormous
- Moments of deep depletion, when you feel like you have nothing left
- Times of disconnection, from yourself, your body, your sense of identity
- The return to work, when the transition brings its own grief and adjustment
- Weaning, which carries its own hormonal and emotional weight
- Anytime the postpartum period feels heavier than you expected it to
You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support. Sometimes the most powerful act of self-care is simply allowing yourself to receive before you hit empty.
You just did something extraordinary. Something your body will carry the memory of for the rest of your life. You deserve support that honors all of you, not just the physical recovery, not just the logistics of new parenthood, but the deep, energetic, identity-level shift that you are moving through. I would be honored to hold space for you in this season.
