Anxiety is one of the most common things clients come to me carrying. It shows up in different forms, a racing mind that won't quiet down, a chest that feels tight even when nothing is wrong, breath that stays shallow no matter how many times you remind yourself to slow down. A nervous system that simply won't settle.
And what I've noticed, session after session, is that anxiety doesn't just live in the mind. It lives in the body. In the energy field. In the places that breathing exercises and positive affirmations can't always reach.
That's exactly where Reiki meets it.
Why Anxiety Is an Energetic Experience
When we're anxious, the experience isn't only psychological, it's deeply physical and energetic. The body constricts. The solar plexus tightens, that place just above the navel where we hold our personal power and sense of safety. The chest closes around the heart. The throat chakra grips, making it hard to speak what's true or breathe what's full.
These aren't metaphors. They're real, felt sensations that show up again and again in the people I work with. The body has a way of holding what the mind cannot fully process. The nervous system absorbs stress, worry, and overwhelm and stores it in the tissue, in the breath pattern, in the energetic field that surrounds and moves through us.
Anxiety creates patterns in the body's energy, constriction where there should be flow, agitation where there should be stillness. And those patterns, if left unaddressed, become the default state. The baseline from which everything else is measured.
Reiki works at exactly that level.
How Reiki Works on Anxious Energy
Reiki doesn't try to talk anxiety away. It doesn't suppress it, bypass it, or analyze it into submission. What it does is work directly with the body's energy field, gently, without force, to release constriction, restore natural flow, and bring the nervous system into a state of deep rest that many anxious people have never experienced.
During a session, I'm holding space for the energy to move. I'm drawn intuitively to where the body is holding tension, and I stay there, with light touch or hands hovering just above the body, until I feel a shift. A softening. A release.
Most clients notice it within minutes. Warmth spreading through the chest. A tingling sensation in the hands or feet. A sudden, unexpected exhale, the kind that comes from somewhere deep and doesn't feel like something you chose to do. It happens on its own, because the body finally has permission to let go.
That kind of settling is not something most anxious nervous systems know how to access on their own. Reiki creates the conditions for it to happen.
"Reiki doesn't fight anxiety. It creates so much peace that anxiety has nowhere left to stand."
What to Expect in a Session
If you've never had Reiki before and anxiety is what brought you here, I want you to know something first: there is nothing you need to do, share, or figure out during our session. You don't need to explain your anxiety or give it a name. You don't need to relive anything. You just need to show up and receive.
Here's how a session typically unfolds:
- We begin with a brief, low-pressure conversation, you share only what feels right
- You lie fully clothed on a comfortable table and close your eyes
- Soft music, dim light, and a warm space are waiting for you
- I work with your energy field using gentle, intuitive touch or hands hovering near the body
- There is nothing to think about, visualize, or get right, your only job is to receive
- The session closes gently, with time to slowly return to the room
Anxiety often shows up as hypervigilance, the need to monitor and control what's happening. In a Reiki session, you're invited to practice the opposite. And most people, even those who've described themselves as "too anxious to relax," find their way there.
What Clients Notice Afterward
The shifts don't always happen all at once. Some people feel dramatically different the moment they sit up from the table. Others notice the changes in the days that follow, quieter, subtler, but unmistakable.
What I hear most often after anxiety sessions:
- A lightness, like something heavy was quietly set down
- Sleep improves, sometimes dramatically, in the nights following a session
- The constant background hum of worry quiets, even if just for a little while
- More capacity to pause before reacting
- A sense of clarity that felt out of reach before
- Physical tension in the chest, jaw, and shoulders beginning to release
Some people cry on the table. That is always welcome. Tears are not a sign that something is wrong, they're often the first indication that something is finally moving. The body knows how to heal itself when we give it the right conditions.
A Note on Reiki and Therapy
I want to be clear: Reiki is not a replacement for therapy or medical care, and I would never suggest that it should be. If you're working with a therapist, a psychiatrist, or a prescribing doctor, please keep doing that. That work matters.
What Reiki offers is something different, a way to address the energetic layer of anxiety that talk therapy doesn't always reach. Many of my most devoted clients see therapists regularly and come to Reiki for the piece that words can't get to. The stored tension in the body. The constriction that conversation alone hasn't moved.
The two work beautifully together. More than once, a client has told me that a breakthrough happened in their therapy session the week after a Reiki appointment, like the energy work opened a door that was previously stuck.
If anxiety has been running the show, I want you to know there's another way to meet it. One that doesn't require you to analyze it to death or white-knuckle your way through another breathing exercise. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply lie down, close your eyes, and let your body remember how to rest. It knows how. It may just need some help finding its way back.
